AI and Beyond: Which Technologies Will Dominate in 2025?
Q: What were the most important technological trends through 2024?
The most important technological trends through 2024 were not a surprise to anyone in the industry. By tradition, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was again the most powerful driving force in the technological world. In addition, we can distinguish Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), as well as technologies which, in the last few years, have been permanently present in the top 10.
These are: Quantum Computing, Robotics and automation, IoT and IIoT (Internet of Things and Industrial Internet of Things), Machine Learning, AR/VR/XR and immersive technologies, 5G, Edge Computing, innovations in cybersecurity, climate technologies, and so on.
Personally, I expected more remarkable, revolutionary innovations in medical technologies, as well as more confident steps in the direction of personalized medicine. I hope that the progress in this area will speed up in 2025, since we have the necessary tools and technological innovations for more rapid development in this domain.
Q: As you said, Large Language Models (LLM) were on the crest of the wave. Which achievements in this field were the most impressive?
So far, the picture is absolutely clear – Large Language Models (LLM) have reached new levels of development, changing both the industry and the world of Artificial Intelligence. They revolutionized the way businesses operate. They themselves also have developed the ability to recognize and generate responses similar to those given by humans. The next wave of technological innovations in the field will certainly focus on developing customized LLM solutions for businesses and various industry verticals.
The emergence of smaller GenAI models and AI agents, as well as the rise in popularity of open source LLMs, which have enabled wider access to leading AI technologies and encouraged innovations, is also among the achievements of 2024.
Overall, progress in the field of LLM has had a significant transformative impact on various sectors and has led to a remarkable revolutionizing of industries.
Q: What does this primarily consist of?
AI and LLM have radically changed the way businesses manage and utilize data. The core power of these technologies lies in their ability to provide valuable insights based on collected and rationalized data. This helps businesses deliver higher quality products and more efficient services, revealing new potential opportunities for innovation across different sectors.
AI and LLM are particularly valuable for their ability to automate tasks. This leads to increased productivity, improved quality of products and services, more efficient use of resources, materials, and personnel, as well as more flexible, modernized, and streamlined workflows and business operations.
The industries most strongly impacted and revolutionized by the innovative advantages brought by AI and LLM include Manufacturing, Healthcare, Commerce, Finance, Logistics, Supply Chain, Transportation, Education, and more. They will continue to provide organizations with invaluable opportunities to anticipate changes in the market and the global demand for goods, commodities, and services, while saving efforts, time, and costs.
Q: Which technologies will dominate in 2025?
2024 was the year of rapid adoption of AI innovations, quick implementation and experimentation, as well as fast transformations and alterations. The year 2025 will be a year for reflection, weighing results and benefits, and assessing the consequences, value, and cost of the transformation driven and led by AI. It will also be the year for developing specific and clear strategies for the degree of continuity and implementation of innovations and for revising existing business models and management frameworks.
Undoubtedly, AI and GenAI will continue to have a huge impact on nearly all industries, businesses, companies’ strategies and priorities. This applies to most related technological fields as well, including Manufacturing, Machining, Robotics, Supply Chains, and Sustainable Energy.
Quantum Computing, Advanced Robotics, IoT (Internet of Things), Biotechnology, Clean Technologies, and Nanotechnologies will also shape the future of business by unleashing enormous opportunities for exponential growth and unprecedented fields for innovation.
My vision for the Top 10 Technology Trends for 2025, categorized by thematic areas, includes:
- AI/GenAI/Conversational AI;
- Quantum Computing;
- Cybersecurity/Post-quantum Cryptography (PQC)/combating misinformation;
- Cloud/Hybrid/Edge Computing;
- Advanced/Multifunctional/AI Robotics and RPA (Robotic Process Automation);
- Neuro- and Biotechnology;
- AR/VR/MR/XR (Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality/Extended Reality) and Digital Twins;
- Sustainable technologies and energy-efficient computing;
- Blockchain;
- Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS)/Ambient Invisible Intelligence.
In addition to these trends, advancements in Emerging Technologies such as 6G and significant progress in Big Data infrastructure will transform and redefine business operations in 2025.
Q: Is humanity close to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)? Does such technology pose any risks, and how should humanity prepare for it?
Opinions on this topic are divided globally. Many experts believe we are still far from achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Numerous questions and challenges remain in the development of this technology despite the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence. While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claims that AGI will be achieved by 2025, I rather believe that there is still a long way of development and understanding before this phase is reached.
The questions facing humanity in relation to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) are of key importance if we consider that René Descartes’ famous philosophical statement “I think therefore I exist” could also apply to non-living organisms.
Regarding the risks, of course such technology carries potential risks, given that it could surpass human intelligence in most of the activities currently inherent to humans. However, given the possibility of achieving AGI in the near future, I prefer to refrain from commenting on the specific potential dangers associated with it and how we could overcome them, so as not to provide any ready-made ideas. One of the major strategies for preparation is to consider possible scenarios.
Q: If we look into the future, how do you envision the world in 5-10 years? Will the technological revolution continue at the same pace? What will it lead to?
In 5-10 years, the world is likely to undergo significant transformations in most areas and spheres that currently exist — technologies, structures, economies, societies and their organization, environment, as well as types of human activity. Many new fields will emerge along with new industries and directions of human development.
Of course, any such prediction would be a mere speculation due to the rapid pace of development in every aspect of our existence, as well as the unpredictability of outcomes from human activity and the evolution of human talent and skills.
Some experts believe that the technological revolution will intensify. However, my opinion leans towards predicting that, given the cyclical nature of events and human development in historical terms, it is more likely to enter a phase of inert, or even slowed progress and growth. The results will largely depend on how societies adapt to these changes, as well as how they manage to regulate and utilize these technologies.
